All of my life I have only wanted one thing: to see the world. I grew up in a small island and with an overprotective family. The rest of the world always felt so far away and unattainable. Fast forward to around 10 years ago, I was living in Florida, working as a domestic flight attendant, and in a failing relationship. My partner at the time and I made plans for my birthday, my very first trip to Europe. I was so excited. A few weeks before the trip my partner says they won’t be able to make the trip. I was angry and devastated, until I decided to just go solo.

My first solo destination was the South of France, specifically Montpellier. A cute little college town full of cafes, shops and a great night life. I chose it because I have a friend from back home that lives there. I flew into Marseilles and then had to catch a train to Montpellier… by myself. Although it was a little nerve wracking, I figured things out and felt accomplished afterwards. I had a lovely time in France and even decided to extend my trip. I took a train to Barcelona some days after. Being alone in Barcelona allowed me to meet awesome people and have great experiences.

Since then I have traveled solo through most of Europe. For the most part, I have always felt safe and locals have been helpful when I need assistance. Some of my current favorite destinations as a solo female traveler are: Guatemala, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, and Georgia (the country). They all provide rich history, amazing food, beautiful sites, relaxing nature (I’m keen on mountains), affordability, plus they are easy to navigate.

Several things I hear from people when I tell them that I prefer to travel solo are:

  • Don’t you get bored traveling alone?
  • Aren’t you scared to be a woman by yourself in a new country?
  • Don’t you feel lonely out there by yourself?
  • Have you ever had a scary experience while traveling solo?

The answer to all these questions is NO. It is hard to get bored when you’re constantly releasing the endorphins that new sights and experiences bring. Even when I do have that down time to relax, I’m either planning out my next move or too tired to be bored. Being alone also motivates me to socialize with strangers more often, which is something you may not get to do if you travel in a group.

Regarding safety, don’t be scared, but always be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Being a woman alone in a new country is just like being a woman alone back home. Be aware. Do your research ahead of time and know which areas to avoid late at night, have emergency contacts handy, and know where to go, in the event of an emergency. I have been lucky enough to not have experienced any emergencies or situations abroad, but they can happen.
